Quick treatment for people with schizophrenia soon after their very first psychotic episode makes a “substantial” difference in their quality of life, according to a major study published Tuesday.

The study, led by John Kane, chairman of the psychiatry department at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, included 404 people treated at 34 clinics across the country after a first psychotic episode, and was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
