Helen Mirren takes the curtain call at opening night for “The Audience.”
The audience at the opening of “The Audience” on Sunday was almost as impressive as the talent on stage. Neil Patrick Harris, David Hyde Pierce, Emily Mortimer, David Geffen, Tyne Daly and Taylor Hackford all turned out to watch Helen Mirren perform at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. During previews, royal subjects including Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Tony Bennett, George Takei, Lucy Liu, Paul Rudd and Bobby Cannavale came to see Mirren play Queen Elizabeth in “The Audience.”
Bill Cosby makes his pitch in pajamas in his video message.
COSBY PROMO IS LAUGHABLE
Beware the two drink minimum. Accused serial rapist Bill Cosby has surfaced to promote his upcoming comedy show in West Virginia, but guess what he didn’t address? In a 10-second video that first aired Monday on ABC, Cosby promised, “You know I’ll be hilarious,” though no reference was made to the 20-plus women who claim he drugged and raped them over the past half-century. The video — in which Cosby is wearing satin pajamas — included the message, “Hey, hey, hey — I’m far from finished.”
STAGING A GRAND OLD PARTY
Homophobic comments allegedly made by a Women’s National Republican Club board member won’t discourage the Gingold Theatrical Group from hosting their March 16 gala at the WNRC club’s W. 51st St. headquarters. “I love the idea of invading enemy territory and making a lot of noise,” Gingold founder David Staller tells Confidenti@l. “I’m very much looking forward to being there and filling the air with the humanitarian precepts we’ve based our company on.” The WNRC has denied claims that a board member recently told guests “we don’t want (lesbians) here.”
Simon Baker’s on a roll with the waves in Sydney.
SIMON IS HEAD OF THE BOARD
It doesn’t take a “Mentalist” to figure out that Simon Baker looks good as a surfer dude. The actor spent Monday catching waves in a clingy wetsuit and Quiksilver board shorts off the coast of Sydney, Australia. It looks like Baker is getting some grooming inspiration from fellow Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth.
A mom’s work is never done, but Eva Mendes says she doesn’t mind it.
EVA OF DESTRUCTION
Add Eva Mendes to the list of exhausted Hollywood moms. “I’m actually enjoying the sleepless nights, because it’s bonding with my little girl,” the 41-year-old mother of 6-month-old Esmerelda tells Women’s Health magazine, where she appears on the cover of its April issue. “I want to respect all the moms out there. They’re going to be like, ‘You know what? You’re a few months in. Just shut up.’ ”
DEMARCHELIER A PICTURE OF SUCCCESS
Superstar photographer Patrick Demarchelier is to receive the advertising industry’s top honor. The legendary snapper, who’s shot ads for everyone from Louis Vuitton to L’Oréal, will accept the Lifetime Achievement Award during the CLIO Image Awards at the Plaza Hotel on May 5. “The CLIO Awards were already considered very prestigious when I started photographing for British Vogue and Elle 30 years ago,” said Demarchelier. “To receive the CLIO Image Lifetime Achievement Award is a very big honor. I am very happy to receive it.”
JESS GOES NOIR
The celebrity uniform during Paris Fashion Week has consisted of all-black everything, all the time. Jessica Chastain followed suit, sporting black from head to toe while out and about in the City of Light. Chastain had her famous three-legged dog Chaplin with her, though she kept the adorable pup home while attending the Givenchy show on Sunday.

The royal family is not amused at a Westminster Abbey event. From left (front): Catherine, Prince William, Camilla and Prince Charles.
Awkward alert! For whatever reason, the Royals looked royally miffed at a Commonwealth Day observance at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday. The pregnant Kate Middleton, due next month, and Prince William arrived with Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles to the ceremony, but no one seemed particularly interested in talking among themselves.
